Playboy and Bintang Zero

Sex is probably the most powerful word and weapon in the universe, and so are words related with it. It is also the most saleable commodity, both in the virtual and the real world. History told us the successful use of sex to pacify strong enemies or leaders, and this applies both for men and women alike.

I just read in the paper that Erwin Arnada, the chief editor of Playboy Indonesia, had been freed by the South Jakarta District court. He had not violated indecency laws in publishing the magazine, according to the verdict. It's true that there were no nude photos featured in the magazine, yet the use of the famous name that closely associated with erotic photos, had created uneasiness among religious groups.

In big and small cities, where people can be connected to the Internet, pornographic materials can be accessed and collected without pain. Erotic photos and videos can be easily transferred between cell phones, and some eventually appeared in the Internet. Adult movies could be purchased on the streets or through other sources.

So, will people be able to contain the spread of pornographic materials attack? It's questionable. We have been defeated by the attack of the excessive and uncontrolled foreign lending that triggered massive corruption cases for more than 30 years that almost made this country bankrupt.

We had been attacked by drug dealers that not only affected artists and celebrities, but also common people in the neighborhood, including students, and even housemaids. Somewhere in Jakarta, and other big cities, gambling and liquors are huge and very profitable businesses.

Bintang Zero, with smart tag of "0% alcohol, 100% Bintang", had tried to penetrate deeper to wider consumer basis, but was stumbled by MUI's edict (Indonesian Ulema Council) that categorized the product as haram. For drinkers, Bintang Zero is not Bintang as it doesn't contain alcohol. Likewise, Playboy Indonesia is not Playboy as it doesn't contain nudity. The association with the main brand, however, is there.

The question is how we can come up with other more effective ways in shielding the people from the ruthless attack of those five deadly sins, other than just imposing stricter regulations and doing firefighting.

Maybe the moral authorities and the society as a whole need to find smarter and more effective ways on how to connect religious and moral teachings with daily lives, as what had been taught so far had failed to curb corruptions and other chronic social problems.
As we are not yet living peacefully in heaven, we'd better be prepared to be in the battles endlessly with no possiblility of producing absolute winners.

Yahh, this is OUR problem..

well, the real question is: does Bintang and Playboy harm society more than restricting the freedoms of those who want to produce and consume those products?
6:02 PM
it's probably more on the mindset and the values that we subscribe to.

that's the problem.. IMHO, i don't agree with both of that, bcoz Indonesia is the biggest moslem country in the world.. just that.
in Islam, that is haram, both of consuming or just resemble.
1:53 AM
i agree; as the discussion may end when we use religious standards, i'd rather open it up, and get some more fresh views from various angles.

7:05 AM
iya seh; banyak hal lain yg lebih penting, seperti kemiskinan misalnya; tentang pendidikan, aku setuju; tinggal gurunya ya jeng disiapin biar metodenya lebih terarah, sehingga gak malah jadi runyam; makacih link-nya jeng; appreciate it

the same question from johnorford reveals on my head.
do those two brand harmed us the same with the producer and the consumer? though, I agree that these two brands' products can trigger the consumer to harm the society =9
but then, it back to us. can our wiseness prevent us from the danger of consuming the products from Bintang and Playoby Indonesia?
p.s.
last thursday i went to a shopping mall in Jakarta and found a new edition of Playboy Indonesia with a picture of a young girl only wear a red bikini in a flying pose on its cover. what about that?
11:34 AM
we can see it not as a threat to society, rather as a achallenge for religious people on how they can make the teachings, and the way they are conveyed, be more relevant and attractive to people, more than those playboy things can do.

Berat banget euy topiknya, bikin saya ga berani ngomong,,hehehe...
Tapi memang bangsa in perlu yang namanya pembenahan moral sejak dini dan sejak lingkungan terdekat (keluarga)..
4:00 PM

manler said...

i have to agree with you sex is the most powerful weapon we have and i believe in most western societies women are starting to figure it out--0 advance card cash credit
10:41 PM
it also applies for men alike bung

jadi kepikiran buat orang2 yg ga setuju regulasi moral trus bilang pendidikan aja dulu dibenerin, kalo udah pinter kan orang bisa milih mau mengkonsumsi porn ato gak. jadi porn only for educated yah?
eh, tapi lagi ga kompre mikirnya ;P
9:35 AM

I think one of the main issues here is consistency, which, as you mentioned, is associated to the brands. There are many other magazines with higher degree of nudity than Playboy Indonesia. The more concerning part is if this trend (legal action) is more financially-motivated than morally-motivated.
6:45 PM
the concern reflects perception that the legal system is still weak, which is probably true, albeit there have been many improvements already in the last few years.

wah... padahal udah ada pelajaran pmp... ppkn... p4
tapi... kayaknya masih aja nih moral bangsa ini mesti dibenerin lagi...
ato... mungkin moral kayak gini yang bagus buat kita kali ya... hiiiyyy tatutt...
8:24 PM

5:42 PM
ho'oh jeng; pada akhirnya adalah pilihan individual, namun ketika nyangkut masyarakat banyak kadang jadi runyam. salam kembali jeng, nengok2 kampung ye, sambil bantu2 ekonomi lokal :D

moral bangsa? hmm.. i always wonder why is it so hard to "educate" our people.. the society.. i mean.. is something wrong with the education system? or what?
coz... i compare it with australian education.. i know nothing about it. forget about playboy for awhile... but the fact that people here care so much about their environment makes me think that... why is it so hard to tell indo ppl to throw litter in the right place???
if we can't even handle the simplest issue... how can we handle pornography?
6:39 PM
it's really hard to get into that level when 40 million of our people are still struggling to survive with basic necessities

11:44 PM
we, udah brapa lama gak pulkam neh jeng... :D

Saya juga orang yang mengikuti berita persidangan Erwin Arnada, dan ternyata dia dibebaskan, herannya padahal banyak sekali majalah dan tabloid yang lebih "serem" dibanding Playboy Indonesia, namun kenapa they don't bring something like that up?
10:14 AM
yg serem2 tapi gak beken ya nilai publisitasnya rendah kale jeng; jadi pada males ngangkatnya, takut jadi publisitas gratisan malahan

byk bgt komen yg ok, aku komen apa ya? :p
emang bener sih mas, 'Sex is probably the most powerful word and weapon in the universe', kalo ga salah sesuai dg teori Freud tuh, coba aja nulis soal itu pasti byk yg komen.
1:59 PM

but still gud posting

"i agree; as the discussion may end when we use religious standards, i'd rather open it up, and get some more fresh views from various angles." --> such a smart comment, smart thinking. i wish there were more people like you.
3:17 PM
there would be jeng, it probably requires a more open mind, a free will, a be yourself kind of thing, and the willingness to explore.

You know, Pak, if I were Erwin Arnada, I'd be in a mental institution right now. I don't know if I have enough mental strength to deal with what he dealt with. And if I were him, as soon as the verdict was in, I'd resign from the bunny mag and start over my life as a brand-free person. Turn into Amish, probably.
It is downright amazing how a simple so-called brand can ruin someone's credibility. Erwin is a good man. He's only stupid (or stubborn) enough to let a bunny got him into trouble.
As for morals...
Wake up my fellow Indonesians. We have a LOT more to worry about than just alcohol contents and nudity.
12:29 AM
it reminds me to the patriot, a mel gibson's movie. it's a choice whether one wants to live by the value he/she subscribes to, dies with it, or makes a compromise with the risk of become nobody.
it's true that we have more other important things to worry, such as poverty and poor education
