The Warning

US just warned its citizens against flying on Indonesian airlines, because the country's civil aviation authority did not meet minimum international safety standards. "Whenever possible, Americans traveling to and from Indonesia should fly directly to their destinations on international carriers," the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta said.

Since I'm not an American, and there are no other better national airlines for local destinations, I will still fly Garuda . I will still certainly fly it for international destinations whenever possible. I believe that there are Americans and many other foreigners who are still flying Garuda too. It's not the best, but it's not a bad airline either.

On the positive side, the warning hopefully will motivate or expedite the improvements on the safety standards of the whole airlines in the country.

Whenever people are afraid of the death, it reminds me to the following sufi story titled Meeting at Samara:

There was a merchant in Baghdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said,

"Master, just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture; now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me. "

The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went.

Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw the Death standing in the crowd and he came to her and said,

"Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning? "

"That was not a threatening gesture," Death said, " it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.
"

Moral: you can't run away from your fate.

  1. Exactly we can't run away from our fate!!! It's certainly something that we have no control over.
    However we can still take some serious precautions to protect ourself againts dying in a plane crash... which is: Don't fly Adam Air.

  9. Fate is one thing while making conscious, calculated-risk decisions is another thing. Regardless, I agree the message could've been more positive and politically correct.

  16. @Nurul: yeah jeng, it's a rational choice that we take; still, even if we fly Adam Air we will not be dying in it if it's not our destination....:D

    @wieda: as some people say that names had been printed in the bullets, which body that they would belong to, when they were manufactured

    @yodee: it provides peace of mind in any daring stuations

    @Kana Haya: we may see it as an attack to a national interest; a more friendlier and positive way might work better

    @dewi pras: it's an overkill

    @wayan: there might be a better way though to convey the message....

    @ario dipoyono: let's fly Garuda and other local airlines that show genuine intention to improve their safety standards; the fate is not our call

    @manler: itu bisa berarti bahwa bung manler masih punya misi mulia yg harus diselesaikan...

    @bleu: it's a politically motivated message that means nothing except makes people hurt and humiliated.

    @Kardi: Harus diakui bahwa di bangsa ini ada banyak proses, prosedur, metode pelatihan dan pendidikan yang harus terus diperbaiki

    @NiLA Obsidian: gak perlu malu lah jeng; biarlah yg malu yg berteriak kenceng tanpa mo bantu dan ngaca dulu

    @Nunung: ho'oh jeng, pesan-nya sebenarnya bahkan tanpa di warning seperti itu pun orang bisa membuat penilaian sendiri; dan saya percaya airliners itu sekarang sedang sibuk untuk meingkatkan kinerja mereka dalam hal keamanan.

    @rime: he...he.., makanya tuh gajah suruh berdiri, jalan2 lihat dunia luar, jangan duduk mulu jadi arogan kayak amrik :D

    @senja: yo'i jeng, kita bantu dorong secara positif ya tanpa bikin warning ke tetangga, teman2, dsb. :D

    @My Alter: ho'oh bung sepokat..
