Toil for a Living

Statistic says that around 40 million of the Indonesian population are now living below poverty line, or $2 a day, and the number will keep on increasing if the government and the society fail to address it properly.

It's always deplorable that the rich natural resources country can't give prosperity to its people, and now many, if not most, of those resources had been taken out from mother earth, making the future looks even more bleak.

I will not offer any magical solutions to reduce number of poor people, since there's no such easy solutions. I will just offer some thoughts through a few images below.

These people may not be that poor. At least they can get Rp.10,000-Rp.15,000 for washing cars, and around Rp.5,000 for motorcycles. Hence, they may not fall below the line. Still, they need support.

Daily income of this kind of people is quite irregular. Give less reasons for them to spread sharp nails on the streets to make some money.

Ojeg motor, motor-taxi, serves people for Rp.3,000 - Rp.20,000, depends on distance. There are many of them now, awaiting in every corners of the city. My kids are their regular customers.

I took the picture, and the other two below, at Sleman, Yogyakarta. Just to capture some people's lives that seems didn't move for tens of years.

The lady was awaiting customers to sell two roosters and a hen, for a profit of around Rp.2,000-Rp.5,000 each.

We just need to open our eyes to look around to see how lucky we are, and find more ways to help those fellow poor citizens of a rich country named Indonesia.

@agga: correct, mismanagement and ignorance, worsen with exploitation

@Mohammad Bakhriansyah: yg kaya spiral kehidupannya ke atas, yg miskin seperti lingkaran setan yg makin nukik. rantainya harus diputus, dan itu perlu bantuan.

@Putirenobaiak: it's not a dream jeng; micro-credit is one of the solutions.

@elly.s: yupe, many of that poor people are hard workers; they just need a little to help.

@artja: makasih bung utk penyemangatnya, salam.
