On Nuclear Power Plant

There are heated debates again on the revival of the government plan to build the first nuclear power plant ever in Indonesia, which will reside in the northern part of Jepara Regency, Central Java.

I might be wrong, but to me it's more of a debate between those who dare to embrace the technology and those who do not; between those who understand scientifically the consequences of the technology -and deal with it- and those who think they know about it -and just want to stay away from it-. It seems that there is no resolution of the differences, especially when the opposing parties play hard with their territorial games.

Both camps actually more or less have the same objective, to serve the people and to protect the greater community from any potential dangers. It's probably more on differences in education back ground, the way they see and approach things, the type of communication and the media they use, the way their minds and hearts work that reflected in their logical and emotional behaviors when addressing the issue.

In general, scientists and engineers have actually no authority and competency to talk about social sciences, but they must learn and work with the expert of those fields when they want to apply science and technology products that will affect the greater community.

Likewise, social scientists and environmentalists have no authority and competency to talk about technical aspects of science and technology, but they need to learn and work with the expert of those fields, and facing the challenges instead of running away from it.

I believe that by trying to listen and learn, with an open mind during the communication exchanges, both parties can gain a better understanding of the other party's positions and concerns, and then instead of trying to defend each other's position and fight for a win-lose situation they can work together to develop a much better plan.

I believe that we shall embrace science and technology and use them for the benefit and advancement of humankind. We would therefore like to see the Nuclear Power Plant be built in the safest possible way, addressing all concerns of the people, including be free from corruption. Hopefully, it can eventually be one of the main energy sources when oil based energy becomes scarce.
