Farewell Pak Harto

Bapak Soeharto, the second President of the Republic of Indonesia had passed away today at 1.10 pm, January 27, 2008, at Pertamina Hospital, Jakarta. He was 86. May he rests in peace.

Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, friends, Indonesian people, us, for the loss of one of the greatest Indonesian sons. The government announced a seven-day national mourning for the late President. He deserves the respect for all of his contribution to the nation, to the countrymen, women and children; and forgiveness for all of his mistakes and wrongdoings.

The funeral procession will be done on Monday. Tempo Interaktif posted reports on its latest news (in Indonesian):

Farewell Pak Harto, you've done whatever you thought were goods for the majority of the Indonesians, and it's up to the Great Judge to decide for the place in the eternal life that you will belong to. Long live the spirit of the patriotic son of the Republic of Indonesia.

Maka, Pak Harto betul2 Orang Besar.

Saya cinta Pak Harto, no matter what he is.

@TASH: peace also for the hearts and minds of the Indonesians, let the souls speak.

@Ecky: this nation will be stronger and respected only when people know how to pay respect to fellow countrymen and know how to treat their leaders, especially when they have passed away.

  13. Setiap orang pasti meninggal... orang besar & berkuasa seperti Pak Harto pun akhirnya harus berpulang ke Rahmatullah.. Selamat Jalan Jenderal !!

saya jadi inget sama kata-kata "gugur satu, tumbuh seribu", apakah setelah Pak Harto Wafat akan lahir 1.000 pak Harto :)

  15. I understand the sentiment. I think it would be a great mistake for Indonesia not to seek justice. If you wish to forgive and forget I also understand that but history will always know the truth and will not be denied.

  16. @Ultratupai: yes, it's probably mereley about the sentiment, but it may also go far beyond that, it's the acceptance of big hearts of what's been written, and to realize that what's happened to us (good or bad), most of the time were the consequences of what we have done earlier (good or evil)that sometimes had direct relations but sometimes not; justice, again, often operates in strange ways.
my view is that human justice is not always the best solution for every case.
forgiveness and put the memory in neutral positions as it's practically impossible to forget, may bring peace in people's mihes and enable them shifting the focus to liven up today and work for better tomorrow.

  18. @amethys: Yeah that's true nduk, but it doesn't mean he's the only person responsible. What aboutlenders' responsibilities? Were they blind, or were they the ones who got the most benefit whilst keep their hands clean...look around nduk, foreign debts keep flowing...
