Maliq & DEssentials@JakJazz

It was the most packed show that I attended on Friday night at the Jakarta International Jazz Festival 2008. The performance took place at Amphitheatre, on the right wing side of the Istora Senayan, Jakarta. Whilst I knew none of the songs, as was when I saw them last year in the same festival and I'm no youth anyway, I did enjoy their music as well as their stage acts. They were awesome.

The lineup of Maliq & D'Essentials are Angga Puradiredja (male vocalist) and Rivani Indriya Suwendi aka Indah (female main vocalist), Ksatria Wicaksana aka Widi (drum), Satrio (guitar, replaced by Lale), Dendy Sukarno (bass), Rif'at S. Fachir (keyboard) and Amar Ibrahim (trumpet). There's another young female vocalist on the stage but there's no information about her.

Angga Puradiredja and Indah were superb. I did not quite remember Indah from the last year show, but I certainly did remember the unique face, the spectacles and hairdo of Angga.

Angga relentlessly moved from corner to corner while singing lively and gestured the audience intimately, while Indah who seemed to be in the early stage of pregnancy didn't move around a lot but she was still quite impressive and entertaining.

Dendy and Rif'at played well and were quite expressive.

Maliq & D'Essentials released their first album in 2004, two years after they were born and after spending most of their time performing in cafes and lounges. They just released a new album titled "Free Your Mind Repackage".
