On Adversity

The Situ Gintung tragedy, as with other events of adversity, reveals many aspects of human traits and behaviors. There are those who are quick in providing any form of assistance without being so fussy about everything else, those who are quick in throwing out words, pointing fingers and put all the blames to whoever and whatever they are, except themselves, or those who use disastrous event like this to do business or build names or for things that would give benefit to them, and so forth. There are plenty of choices, and people have freedom to choose.

It’s true that Situ Gintung tragedy might be avoidable or minimized, as with most, if not all, other tragedies, whether they are completely natural phenomena or are triggered by human acts. If we are talking about human casualties, however, I am a believer that no single death was occurred without God's permission. It means that with or without those disasters, the chosen persons would still be called to go to heaven, only with many different ways.

Hence, the losses of human lives, in whatever situations, were already pre-approved. Without the approval, there will always be something that will make people do or doesn't do things that would avoid him or her to face death. To accept the bitter fact, to send solemn prayer to the chosen, to provide comfort and to support to the affected families, therefore, are wiser than anything else.

My sympathy also goes to those who were chosen to be in the position that could actually do things differently, but either they did nothing or didn't do it properly, to prevent or reduce the degree of the calamities. They could hold low or key positions in local or central government, or they could be anyone who happened to be around the place. Hope they can find comfort by doing whatever they can to help the victims, and if necessary surrender their positions to give chance to more capable and more caring persons.

No matter which role that you choose to play during events of adversity, it doesn't really matter, as one will compliment or neutralize the other. What does matter is when you really care.
