Danny and Marlayne

These are another new names that were added into my limited memory library of world Jazz musicians, particularly those from the Netherlands. The husband and wife jazz musicians, Danny and Marlayne Sahupala, performed at Big Stage 2 on the left wing of Istora Senayan Jakarta at the JakJazz festival last November.

They were supported by Sandrah Sahupala on percussion, Boudweijn Lucas on bass, Tom Beek on saxophone, Lou Guldemond on guitar, and Arjen Mooijer on keyboard. Whilst Danny was on drum with Marlayne as the lead vocal.

The first song they played was really good, not only for ears but also for eyes, particularly watching Sandrah who was very expressive and lively. She seemed enjoyed every sound she produced on the percussion, and helped the group to create a good non-verbal communication with the audience.

Marlayne appeared on the stage when the group played the second song, and immediately caught people attention with her shiny hair, beautiful face, slender appearance, and good voice. She also helped to group to build communication with the audience, an important thing in every successful live performance.

Their choices of music, a blend of smooth jazz, soul, funky and sometimes blues, made me easily enjoyed the show. It's understandable that as results of their intense exploration of many different type of music, they have once won the Heineken Crossover Award.

It's a must see performance when they are on stage at the next Jazz Festival in town, hopefully at the next Java Jazz Festival early next year. You will enjoy Sandrah's charming expression and Marlayne smooth voice, backed by a solid crossover jazz band.
