Al Makmur Tanah Abang Mosque was built to replace a very simple prayer house sizing only 12 × 8 meters which was built in 1704 by the highborn of Islamic Mataram Kingdom led KH Muhammad Asyuro.
Much of construction cost of f 35,000 for the mosque that was originally sized 44 x 28 m was covered by Syed Abu Bakar, who was also a founder of the orphanage Daarul Aitam. The design of the mosque was done by a Dutch architect. In 1932 and 1981 the mosque building was expanded again.
Al Makmur Tanah Abang Mosque has two short towers with green colored dome-shaped roof. The dome base has rectangle shape that tapers at the top and hence resembles a cupola a bishop hat.
